Each hand is drawn in Curwen’s view: from the teacher’s left, cuff to the right. Height in the row is pitch; the two short steps between signs are the semitones.
The sign for fa is a finger pointing down; the sign for ti is a forefinger pointing up. The other five are a fist or an open hand, and point nowhere.
Curwen gives the reason: te has “a strong tendency to cling or lead to doh”, while fah has “an equally strong desire to fall to me”. Each of the two fingers points at the tone a semitone away.
Why the numbers can be trusted.
