Nine bits in three triads, three special bits — and why r and x on a directory are different powers
Built as a memo rather than a table: the thing worth hanging it up for reads across the room, with the full reference in smaller type below it.

Each digit is read on its own: 4 for r, 2 for w, 1 for x. The system picks one class — the one the process falls into — and looks only at that triad.
Read lets you list the names in a directory; execute lets you reach what a name points to. The standard puts them on different pages: opendir() fails without r, open() fails without x.
So r-- on a directory shows you the names and opens nothing, while --x opens any name you already know and shows you none.
Why the numbers can be trusted. Every countable number here is computed from data rather than typed in, and the sheet must pass 8 independent checks before it is allowed to build — how many items there are, the order they come in, and the claim in the highlighted box itself. If one fails, there is no file.
