THE FUNDAMENTAL NEED NOT BE IN THE SIGNAL AT ALL

The lowest note of a bass guitar is 41 hertz. Neither a phone speaker nor a laptop speaker reproduces that frequency at all: they have nothing to produce it with. Yet the bass is audible on them, and the note is heard correctly.

The ear derives pitch not from the fundamental itself but from the pattern of overtones that are whole multiples of it: 82, 124, 165 hertz and onwards. The series remains, so the note remains. Schouten described this in 1940; it is known as residue pitch.

The practical consequence is not obvious: lifting 40 hertz on a bass will not make it audible on a small speaker, because those hertz were never there. What makes it audible is the region of its own overtones — the pale band on this sheet.

  • Nothing about how it was made: the sheet carries only what the reader needs.

Printing

  • White background and sparing fills — it prints on a home printer without draining the cartridge.
  • Margins of at least 10 mm: a home printer cannot print to the edge.
  • No stroke thinner than 0.3 mm, so nothing disappears in print.

Why the numbers can be trusted. Every countable number here is computed from data rather than typed in, and the sheet must pass 9 independent checks before it is allowed to build — how many items there are, the order they come in, and the claim in the highlighted box itself. If one fails, there is no file.
