PANNING IS ONLY A LEVEL DIFFERENCE, AND THE LOW END CANNOT HEAR IT

A pan knob does not move sound through space. It does exactly one thing: change the balance of level between two channels. One of the two cues the ear uses to find direction is precisely that — a level difference between the ears, and it arises when the head casts an acoustic shadow.

The shadow exists only while the wave is shorter than the head. At 1.5 kHz the wavelength is 23 centimetres, exactly the path from one ear to the other; below that the wave bends around the head and almost no level difference remains. At 50 hertz the wave is seven metres long — some thirty heads.

That is why a club or a cinema runs one subwoofer for everyone, and why the kick and the bass are kept centred not out of tradition: spread apart they will not move left and right, but they will hand half the available headroom to one loudspeaker.

On the sheet

  • A dot marks where the image lands between the loudspeakers, not where the knob points. Check the mix in mono: the centre rises by 3 dB there.
  • Colour carries meaning, but meaning never rests on colour alone — the sheet reads in black and white.
  • Nothing about how it was made: the sheet carries only what the reader needs.

Printing

  • Three sizes in the archive: A4 — 210×297 mm, A3 — 297×420 mm, A2 — 420×594 mm.
  • All text is converted to outlines. No fonts to install, and nothing shifts on another machine.
  • White background and sparing fills — it prints on a home printer without draining the cartridge.
  • Margins of at least 10 mm: a home printer cannot print to the edge.
  • No stroke thinner than 0.3 mm, so nothing disappears in print.

Why the numbers can be trusted. Every countable number here is computed from data rather than typed in, and the sheet must pass 8 independent checks before it is allowed to build — how many items there are, the order they come in, and the claim in the highlighted box itself. If one fails, there is no file.
