The thumb never lands on a black key. In B flat major those are B flat and E flat — and that alone is enough for the rest of the numbers to fall into place.
It is shorter than the other fingers and reaches that far into the keyboard only sideways; put on a black key, it drags the whole hand after it, and the next note arrives late.
So the digits need not be memorised: it is enough to remember the prohibition and watch where the hand lands after it.
