A ROLL’S NAME IS A COUNT, NOT A LABEL

Five stroke, seven stroke, seventeen stroke — the number in the name means exactly what it says: how many strokes there are in one roll. Not bars, not beats, not doubles. Strokes.

Which is why almost all of them are odd. A roll made of double strokes finishes with one single tap, so the total comes out as twice something plus one — a number that can never be even. The two even-numbered rolls in the list, the six and the ten stroke, stand there as the exceptions, and are built differently.

The list of forty itself was drawn up by the Percussive Arts Society in 1984, after a five-year committee project. Twenty-six of the forty came from the older American set, the Standard 26; they are starred on this sheet, and it is those stars that show what 1984 actually added.

Printing

Three sizes in the archive: A4 — 210×297 mm, A3 — 297×420 mm, A2 — 420×594 mm.
All text is converted to outlines. No fonts to install, and nothing shifts on another machine.
White background and sparing fills — it prints on a home printer without draining the cartridge.
Margins of at least 10 mm: a home printer cannot print to the edge.
No stroke thinner than 0.3 mm, so nothing disappears in print.

Why the numbers can be trusted. Every countable number here is computed from data rather than typed in, and the sheet must pass 8 independent checks before it is allowed to build — how many items there are, the order they come in, and the claim in the highlighted box itself. If one fails, there is no file.
