Dropping the sixth string a tone puts the three lowest strings into a bare interval: D — A — D, root and fifth with no third.
So any chord on them is taken with one finger across three strings, and it sits equally well in major and minor — the third that would have to choose between them is simply not there.
That is where three decades of heavy guitar came from: not from distortion, but from the chord no longer needing a hand.
