THE FIVE-MILLION-DOLLAR COMMA

In O’Connor v. Oakhurst Dairy (2017) a missing serial comma in a Maine overtime law left “packing for shipment or distribution” as one activity instead of two — and the appeals court sided with the dairy’s drivers. The case settled for five million dollars.

The court opened its opinion with the words: “For want of a comma, we have this case.”

Every countable number here is computed from data rather than typed in, and the sheet must pass 9 independent checks before it is allowed to build — how many items there are, the order they come in, and the claim in the highlighted box itself. If one fails, there is no file.
